Throo the Zoo 5k this weekend at the Louisville Zoo

Every time you turn around, it seems, there’s a 5K race for some cause or issue. The best thing about a 5K? For someone like me who likes walking but not running, a 5k  is very, very do-able.

This Saturday, the 20th annual Throo the Zoo 5K will be held at the Louisville Zoo.

To me, this is one of the coolest races held in this area. You will be walking “throo” the zoo-past the polar bears (Qannik!), past the tigers, past the giraffes, the elephants, monkeys….well, you get the idea.

    Who wouldn’t love that?

Starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp, the course starts at Illinois Avenue and Trevilian Way, heads through the neighborhood to Poplar Level Road, goes through Joe Creason Park into the Zoo and then finishes in the Zoo’s parking lot.

Registration is required. Advance registration is available until midnight on May 8 or in person at Fleet Feet Sports on 2239 Taylorsville Rd before May 7. The cost is $30.

Online registration can be found at http://www.louisvillezoo.org/events/throozoo.htm.

Late Registration is in person at Fleet Feet Sports (2239 Taylorsville Rd.)  on May 8-10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is $35.

On the day of the race, registration will be held 7:00 a.m.-7:45 a.m. and is $45.

No race packages will be mailed. Advance pickup of race numbers, T-shirts and instructions will be available May 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Fleet Feet Sports (2239 Taylorsville Rd.)  or at the Zoo on race day, beginning at 7 a.m.

Post-race, there will be healthy refreshments, door prizes and race participants can roam the zoo, as the registration fee includes zoo admission.  Awards will be given out to the top finishers, such as the Ostrich Award.

Participants also will receive a commemorative t-shirt and we all know one of the biggest reasons people do a 5K is for the t-shirt.

    Right?
