The Louisville Zoo will soon celebrate Qannik’s first birthday. The celebration will include a special ice cake of fruit and seafood and some new enrichment items will be presented to Qannik while guests sing “Happy Birthday”. Guests will also get a chance to do a video greeting for Qannik that will be posted on the Zoo’s website. This celebration will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 1:15 p.m. in Glacier Run. Please call prior to coverage and sign in at the receptionist’s desk in the administration building.
Qannik was born in the wild of Alaska’s North Slope in January 2011. In April she was found alone on a Conoco Phillips’oil field. Qannik had been separated from her mother and sibling and was rescued by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service shortly after being discovered alone. She came to the Louisville Zoo on June 28, 2011. Qannik (pronounced“KUN’nik” ) means “snowflake” in the Iñupiaq language and is also the name of the oil field where she was found.
