    Bit to Do

    December 5Ks and Fun Runs
    Print this page

When you think about it, December is a great month for fun runs: People are feeling a bit more social and looking to burn off high-calorie indulgences. Throw in the benefits to local charities and a head start on New Year vows to get in shape, and you’ve got the opportunity to check off a bunch of goals all at once. These December runs will have Louisville moving.

Reindeer Romp 4K Run/Walk: Four kilometers is 2.4 miles, the length of the Cherokee Park loop. On December 14th, the Romp starts at Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park. Registration is $25 after December 10th, and late registration the day of the race is from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., at Hogan’s Fountain. Cash prizes for category winners and free t-shirts for the first 1,000 registrants. The Romp is the first of three races in the Sternberg Automotive Group Polar Bear Grand Prix (with the Frostbite 5k and the Snowman Shuffle 4 Mile, both in early 2014).

Go Santa Go 5K: This annual event benefits No-Kill Louisville this year, a fabulous all-volunteer group creating and supporting no-kill animal services and programs for our city. The race is a colorful one: Each runner is given either a Santa or an Elf costume to wear. The race is December 14, 9:00 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Walk-up registration the day of the event is $50 per person. Pets are welcome!

Eggnog 5K: Drink eggnog and run? Sure, why not, when it’s for a good cause? And you’re encouraged to wear your ugly Christmas sweaters, too. This fun race, on December 22, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Belle of Louisville, uses proceeds to purchase new shoes for homeless Louisville citizens. The entire event includes a concert at Headliners on December 19, and a post-race dinner with some of the homeless community that this race’s organizers are trying to serve. Registration of $15 for the race only closes December 19. See the site for more details on this series of events.

    About Kachina Shaw

A transplanted Hawkeye, I've now lived in Louisville longer than any other city. Can't live without: my husband and fur babies, coal-black coffee, peanut M&Ms, sunflowers, monthly vacations, books, walking paths, massage and a big purse.
