The numbers have been tallied up, and the recent Whisky Chicks and Bourbon Brotherhood Bourbon Mixer at The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience raised $10,467 for the Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville. This money will be specifically used to work toward the goal of eliminating veteran homelessness in the city of Louisville.
Since 2011, The Coalition for the Homeless has reduced Louisville’s chronically homeless population by 50%. Because Mayor Greg Fischer signed the pledge to end Veteran homelessness, the next project on the Coalition’s horizon is to help coordinate efforts to get homeless veterans into permanent housing.
There are lots of different organizations that help the homeless in Louisville. Homelessness is a multi-faceted problem that requires helping people in multiple different ways. The Coalition for the Homeless coordinates the efforts of the other organizations to make sure homelessness is addressed in a cohesive way. In addition to coordinating the efforts of over 30 different organizations, they also work to educate the public about Louisville’s homeless population.
According to a recent press release from The Whisky Chicks, Executive Director of The Coalition for the Homeless Natalie Harris reports, "There are approximately 200 homeless veterans in Louisville on any given night and just over 900 persons who reported to be homeless veterans in Louisville throughout 2013. This is a very manageable problem that we as a community can solve if we are working together to make it happen."
