    Angel McCoughtry and Shoni Schimmel had solid starts to the WNBA season.

    Here’s a closer look at how the two former University of Louisville stars, who are now standouts for the Atlanta Dream, did in the first week of the season.  

    McCoughtry averaged 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game for the Dream, who started the season with a pair of losses and a win.  

    She had 27 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in Atlanta’s season-opening 82-73 loss at New York last Friday night. She was 8 for 19 from the field, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, and 10 for 10 from the free throw line while also blocking one shot and committing four turnovers in 37 minutes.

    Two days later McCoughtry tallied 10 points and seven rebounds in the Dream’s 75-70 loss to visiting Connecticut in its home opener. She was 4 for 13 from the field, including 0 of 2 from 3-point range, and 2 for 2 from the free throw line while also dishing out two assists, recording one blocked shot and committing six turnovers in only 25 minutes due to a minor knee injury.

    McCoughtry bounced back to tally a team-high 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals in Atlanta’s 72-69 win over visiting San Antonio on Thursday night. She was 8 for 20 from the field, including 0 of 4 from 3-point range, and 5 for 6 from the free throw line while also tallying two assists and committing five turnovers in 32 minutes.

    Meanwhile Schimmel averaged 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

    She tallied 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists as a starter in visiting Atlanta’s loss to the Liberty last Friday night. She was 4 for 9 from the field, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range, while also recording one steal and committing three turnovers in 24 minutes.

    Two days later Schimmel had six points, seven rebounds and three assists in the Dream’s loss to the visiting Sun. She was 2 for 10 from the field, including 2 of 7 from 3-point range, while also committing five turnovers in 31 minutes.

    Thursday night Schimmel scored six points and had three assists off the bench in Atlanta’s first win. She was 2 for 4 from 3-point range and had one rebound and one turnover in 14 minutes of action.

    Atlanta (1-2) next plays at Washington on Friday and at Connecticut on Sunday before hosting Indiana next Tuesday.
