While I am personally fond of women musicians, specifically singers, there is one whose ground breaking style was far ahead of her time.  Before the likes of Regina Spektor and Kate Nash, who I think have similar sounds, there was Fiona Apple.

For those of us who were old enough to fondly recall the late 90s, you couldn’t listen to the radio or watch MTV, when they actually played music, without coming across the sultry voice of Fiona Apple.  Her triple platinum debut album, had those jams Shadow Boxer, Sleep to Dream, and of course Criminal.  While there were many memorable moments of this great ride she was on, my personal favorite was her acceptance speech from the MTV Music Awards for best new artist which was eloquently simple.  “This world is bullsh**, and you shouldn't model your life on what we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying."  A lot of levels of awesome right there and very prophetic.

With the release of her latest album ‘The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do’ (yes that’s really it), Apple further delivers beautiful songs in her own fashion, as always.  Hopefully tomorrow’s performance will highlight all of these gems and throw in some blasts from the past as well.  In speaking with her promotions company, her show is a ‘must see’ and I honestly am siding with them even though it’s obviously their job to say such things.  You should all join me for Fiona tomorrow to witness the latest goodness.

Recently I was telling a friend of mine about being a ‘Music Writer’ here on our beloved website and he had some interesting questions.  ‘Do you get to meet the bands?’  Sometimes.  ‘Do you do interviews?’  Sometimes.  ‘Oh you are covering Fiona, are you going to ask her if she’s been a baaaaad baaaaaad girl if you get to talk to her?’  Absolutely not, as I wouldn’t want to be the first and I’m a delicate man who can’t be careless.  Besides after a little brush with the Texas Border Patrol over some hash, the poor gal’s been through enough.  See you all tomorrow at The Palace!
