After Louisville won the NCAA men’s basketball championship, the Sugar Bowl, and were runners up in the women’s basketball tournament they received a lot of press from the Capital One Cup.
This running contest awards the school with the best record in all their sports a collected $ 400,000 dollars.
But, Cards fans might want to hold off a second before celebrating this victory as they currently have a bronze in the contest. Third behind another local school Indiana and ironically the team who the Cards beat to cut down the net in the NCAA tourney, Michigan, the way the Capital One Bowl works is for each sport major victory a certain amount of points are awarded- they divide up the contest between Men’s and Women’s sports. Speaking of which the Lady Cards aren’t too far down on the standings lists themselves currently tied for 12th place.
The Kentucky men’s teams are currently tied for 53 in the contest, while the Lady Cats are doing substantially better at 24.
The competition is pretty new, it’s inaugural season being in 2010-2011 when Florida won for the men and Stanford for the Women, the following year again Florida and Stanford reigned supreme.
Currently on the men’s side Florida is tied for 17th though, but for the women Stanford is still atop the heap.
The cup boasts advisors of a lot of repute, including former Cincinnati Reds all-star and World Series champion Barry Larkin, former Heisman Trophy winner, CFL, and NFL star Doug Flutie, Soccer superstar Brandi Chastain, and women’s basketball legend Lisa Leslie among others.
