It had all the makings of a blowout.

After a Russ Smith steal and layup barely five minutes into the second half, UofL had stretched its halftime lead of eight points to seventeen and UK had turned the ball over 5 times. The crowd was rocking and the Cats had given you no reason to expect they could come back.

Then they went and did just that. Kyle Wiltjer stopped the bleeding with two of his four threes and Archie Goodwin scored 17 of his 22 in the final 8:07, including 10 in the final two minutes, to lead a furious rally that ultimately fell just short 80-77.

Goodwin led all scorers with 22 and Ryan Harrow continued his strong play with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 39 turnover-free minutes. UofL was led in scoring by Russ Smith with 21, and Chane Behanan with 20. Peyton Siva scored 19 points, but fouled out on an Archie Goodwin three pointer in the final minute that allowed UK to close to within 3 points. In his first game back since breaking his wrist, Gorgui Dieng scored 6 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

After the game Calipari blamed himself for the loss, specifically for not calling a timeout with seventeen seconds left when Goodwin was trapped on the baseline with UK down four. Goodwin went on to throw an ill-conceived cross court pass that was intercepted by Behanan and dunked to, as Calipari said “end the game”. He praised his team for playing what he called the best team in the country tough in a raucous environment. He was not happy with the play of Alex Poythress, who didn’t start for the first time all year in favor of Willie Cauley-Stein, and said afterwards he will be working with Poythress directly in the days ahead.
