    The Third Annual Cure for the Common Book Club

    Carmichael's will host its third annual Cure for the Common Book Club this Thursday evening. Several of Carmichael's exceptional and knowledgeable staff members will present fresh ideas, offer suggestions, and entertain you with ways to start, maintain, enliven and spice up your book club. We'll have giveaways, refreshments, love (of books) and laughter. Come with your own ideas...leave with some of ours! If you are in a book club, looking to join a book club, or hoping to start one, you won't want to miss this event!

    Bourbon Women “Sip-osium” at French Lick
    Bourbon Women, a member-based organization founded in 2011 to promote and preserve the heritage of bourbon through educational, networking and charitable events, will hold its first-ever “sip-osium,” an immersive weekend of bourbon enjoyment and education, at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana, Aug. 22-23. Tickets for Saturday only are $150 for members and $200 for non-members. The resort is also offering discount hotel room rates for sip-osium attendees.     The Rising Art, Music, and Spoken Word August Show 
     This monthly open-mic and art exhibition series, whose mission is to give local emerging performing artists, writers, and fine artists a platform to share art, music, and words is co-sponsored by Louisville Area Realtors and Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead. This Friday’s show features writer Angela Jackson-Brown, musician Jacob Head, and artist Sheri Wright. Jackson-Brown’s work has appeared in literary journals, such as: Pet Milk, Uptown Mosaic Magazine, New Southerner Literary Magazine, The Louisville Review, Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal, Blue Lake Review, Identity Theory, Toe Good Poetry, and 94 Creations. Her short story, "Something in the Wash" was awarded the 2009 fiction prize by New Southerner Literary Magazine and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in Fiction. Her debut novel, Drinking from a Bitter Cup was published in January. Also in attendance will be Jacob Head, who has been arranging and composing music for concerts and groups since 2008, mostly for The Compass Quartet. He is currently the worship leader at Life Bridge Christian Church, and hopes to continue bringing joy to others through the music he creates. Aside from playing the violin, Jacob also enjoys playing the guitar, bass guitar, piano, mandolin, ukulele and banjo. Also in attendance will be two-time Pushcart Prize and Kentucky Poet Laureate nominee, Sheri L. Wright, who is the author of six books of poetry, including the most recent, The Feast of Erasure. Wright’s visual work has appeared in numerous journals, including Blood Orange Review, Prick of the Spindle, Blood Lotus Journal and Subliminal Interiors. Her photography has been shown across the Ohio Valley region and abroad. Currently, she is working on her first documentary film, Tracking Fire. The Rising is free and open to the public.

    IRONMAN Louisville

    IRONMAN will be in Louisville this weekend, presented by Norton Sports Health. Athletes will begin their day with a swim in the Ohio River, then a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2 miles of flat running. There will be 140.6 miles on the course in all. If you’d like to track an athlete during the event there will be live race day coverage at ironman.com.
