This weekend, this one final weekend before the inception of the school year can not be wasted. No, this weekend is the end to all that smells of summer. No more sleeping in, no more sending kids to bed with sweaty heads and dirty feet, no more dilemma over what to do today. Monday morning, bright and early, life will accelerate, the routine machine will squash daily freedom, the school year will begin. As a teacher, I feel the magnitude of this weekend, so plan wisely, live it up, suck the last bit of pleasure from this final weekend. Check below for a few ideas.

    Bernheim at Night--

Saturday, August 13, Bernheim will feature a Full "Grain" Moon Night Hike from 8:30-10:30. The hike will stay on open trails and roads so that travel sans a flashlight is possible…the moon is your guide (well, and Bob Lenning, Certified Interpretive Guide). Lenning will weave together stories about night ecology, moon lore, history, and night magic during the moon-lit hike. Members are $10, non-members are $12.

Second Saturday Family Day at the Frazier--

This month's theme is all about "girl power" as participants will learn about the Suffragettes while making buttons and sashes. Live reenactments depicting a slice of the life of women during this time period will be featured throughout the day. Membership to the Kids Club is free and allows free admittance each month on the Second Saturday.

    Pick a Picnic--

Depending on your preference, there are two great family-friendly picnics happening this Saturday. If you're in to gambling for cake and ham, draft beer, and some highly interesting people watching, then the St. Joseph Children's Home Orphan's Picnic on Frankfort Avenue (Sat. 12-12:00) is for you. Never a shortage of things to do if you don't mind fighting for your space among the hordes of people (children leashes actually make sense at this event). If that sounds dreadful, try the more tranquil Slow Food Family Picnic at Locust Grove. From 12-4:30 on Sunday, celebrate slow food at this relaxed, family-friendly picnic. Local growers and food trucks will feature their fare, view the Cast-Iron Chef demo, learn about gardening and growing your own, and tour the grounds. Admission is $5 per car, bikers and walkers are free.
