No question, pound for pound, everyone knows the Va Va Vixens is the best performance troupe in town – and any time they debut a new show, you already know you should be there…with pasties on.
Show runner Lisa Frye and cast of overabundant talent have managed to figure out a working formula that blends amazing athletic feats, gravity defying performances, complex dance routines and epic musical numbers with comedy, wit and charm…and more than a little bit of sexy.
Their latest show, which premiers this weekend at Headliners and will be running for the next three weekends, is called “Va Va Vortex.” It’s a burlesque-ish twist on the classic time travel narrative, which takes its two quirky, goofball characters (who act as pseudo-emcees) through space and time to the future and the past – each segment in time represented by a different performance within the show.
The tropes of the show are more “Dr. Who” than they are “The Time Machine,” following a wayward time traveler and his post-civilization hippy companion through fantastical futuristic scenarios, as well as historical backdrops that recall Jack the Ripper, Marie Antoinette and the stone age. There are even nerdy, geek boy fantasies come to life as performers offer a wink and nudge to pop-culture fanboys with Star Trek references and an acrobatic aerial show from Slave Leia.
It’s big, it’s weird, it’s sultry – it’s everything that makes the Va Va Vixens a staple in the Louisville art scene – you don’t want to miss one of your ample opportunities to see this show.
“Va Va Vixens present: Va Va Vortex,” opens Friday June 5 at Headliners Music Hall. Other performances will be on June 6, 13, 19 and 20. All performance are at Headliners Music Hall, and all shows begin at 8 o.m. Tickets are on sale for $20-$35.
