Unconscious Collective 3, the latest installment of the 14-part group art show organized by Louisville artist Andrew Cook, opens at 6 p.m. tonight at Derby City Espresso.

Keeping with Cook's idea of fusing individual works from Louisville artists into one unifying piece of art, Unconscious Collective 3 features 10 local artists who've displayed their work in the previous two shows along with 10 more area artists making their debut in the series.

"Basically this is to be an homage to the synchronicity, the collective consciousness and unconsciousness of the Earth," Cook said about the series when we last spoke.

Live music from Scotch Bonnet Sounds and Gnuma starts at 7 p.m. tonight. And DCE will be serving its usual bevy of quality beers (try the Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout). The event is part of the First Friday Trolley Hop.

As for how Cook selects the artists? "Very much from the seat of my pants," he said. "It's kind of along the lines of Jack Kerouac's stream-of-consciousness writings."

"The past two shows didn't have any theme," he said. "I wanted to do a neat group art show." This time, however, Cook didn't want the artists to be as random so he gave the artists theme words that they could use--or not--in deciding what work to show.

"It's a fun art experiment," Cook said.

Cooks selection of artists and themes for his series of shows is influenced by his studies of the Mayan calendar and evolutionary theory. But Cook doesn't think of the Mayan calendar as the doomsday predictor that it's often portrayed to be. "That's what a lot of religions want to grab on to, but I want to be not about that," Cook said. "This is a really exciting thing and it's full of life. That kind of fear caps certain magic off and stifles what I'm going for here."

Cook plans to hold the shows four times a year through Dec. 2012 with a special 14th show to follow.
