Combining new exhibitors with ones who showed their work at the inaugural event in May, Unconscious Collective 2 organizer Andy Cook is taking the second step in his quest to create a unifying sculpture or story from the creations of local artists.
"Basically this is to be an homage to the synchronicity, the collective consciousness and unconsciousness of the Earth," Cook said.
Derby City Espresso (331 E. Market St.). is hosting the second show, which runs through Sept. 30, in what Cook plans to be a series of shows held four times a year through Dec. 2012.
"I I'm kind of projecting towards the end of it will be towards the end of the Mayan calendar," Cook said, referring what Wikipedia describes "a system of distinct calendars and almanacs used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica" that many followers interpret as forecasting a cataclysm on Dec. 21, 2012.
The opening reception for the second installation of this group art show is at 6 p.m. tonight as part of the First Friday Trolley Hop. There'll be live music from Jaimee Duvall, Bro. Stephen and Gnuma starting at 9 p.m. and Derby City Espresso's beers and coffee will be for sale throughout the evening.
Each show in the series features about 20 local artists, half of whom have showed their work in a previous Unconscious Collective show, the other half of whom are new participants.
"The people really seem to amaze me. I think that I know their work, then I go over and I see something new that just captivates me. Usually it captivates the diamond part, the soul," Cook said.
Artists' contributions include sculptures, silkscreens, blank journals and paintings.
"The whole thing shines as one story," Cook said.
Learning from the first Unconscious Collective, Cook has streamlined this exhibit, limiting artists to just three contributions and doing away with the show book.
Cook said one of the outcomes of the last show was that it encouraged participants to both produce and show their work. "A couple of them said that just me asking them to be part of it gave them a little bit of extra purpose," Cook said. "I want to ignite everybody."
In addition to Cook, the artists showing their work in this installation are Laurie Blayney, Jeremy Dixon, Jen Goodell, Mike Ratterman, Emily Adams, Kenn Parks, Joshua Vance, Carol McLeod, Sean Garrison, Rachel Seed, Tim Faulkner, Erin Fitzgerald, Scott McCrory, William Davis, Aron Conaway, Wilfed E. Sieg III, Kathy Fitzgerald and Beef Gibson.
