The Kentucky High School State boy’s soccer championship came to a conclusion November 9th as Lexington’s Paul Dunbar defeated Louisville’s Trinity- 2-1.
Sixteen teams state wide competed from the semi round for this year’s trophy, among these the Louisville Area’s Fern Creek, North Oldham and Trinity.
Fern Creek was taken down by Trinity in the quarterfinals, while North Oldham fell to Bowling Green in the Elite 8.
The games which began in October were all played at two differing cites in Lexington.
Meanwhile, Lexington also was home to the girl’s soccer championship which fielded sixteen schools, of which area teams featured were Oldham County, Mercy, and Sacred Heart. Oldham County made it to the final four defeating Elizabethtown and Bowling Green.
Mercy was taken out in the first round against area rival Sacred Heart, who would go on to defeat Owensboro Catholic leading to their victory over Oldham County.
In the championship game however, Sacred Heart fell to Notre Dame- 2-0.
Consequently, the last time a boys soccer team won the Kentucky state championship was last season when St. X claimed a victory over Dunbar, in that series the Tigers knocked off South Oldham, Corbin, and Boone County prior to meeting and defeating Dunbar.
An area school hasn’t won the girl’s championship since 2009 when Sacred Heart beat out Notre Dame for the title. In that quest the girl’s team went through South Oldham, Manual, and Lexington Catholic prior to reaching that title matchup.
Area high school soccer teams might be in the off-season currently, as the tournament recently concluded however that doesn’t mean their inactive as building these teams is a year round endeavor and certainly that’s the case for any state champion.
