Here’s a look at some fall area high school sports and what teams to look out for.
Volleyball
Girl’s Volleyball continues to be run in Louisville by a handful of schools. Schools to look out for are Assumption, this perennial powerhouse won the Kentucky State championship last year and has continued to prove themselves to be a strong competitor against whoever they’re faced up against.
Perhaps Mercy can be considered their rivals and sure enough they met up with each other in that championship matchup from last year, the previous year Mercy took the championship. As such look out for their next meeting at Assumption, October 4th at 7 p.m.
Sleeper Team: South Oldham; as of late they have had continually strong showings but haven’t yet been able to fully overcome the duo of Mercy and Assumption. That said, one has to like the work ethic of this team.
Boys’ Soccer (Varsity)
Oldham County has to be where one looks this year. During last year’s state championship, Oldham was the only school from the area represented, in addition their known for their strong competition.
I also have to give a nod to Eastern High School Eastern comes in this year with fourteen returning seniors. That experience could result in success. These two will meet up at Eastern September 27.
Sleeper Team: Kentucky Country Day, KCD often gets overlooked due to its private school status but it annually brings out quality talent.
Girls’ Soccer (Varsity)
First up DuPont Manual, the Rams have developed a strong girls’ soccer program in recent years, last year alone making it to the semi-finals of the state championship.
I’m also interested to see how Sacred Heart recovers after being knocked out of last year’s state championship in the first round by Manual. In the regular season, these two have not been scheduled for a rematch game yet but it is possible.
Sleeper Team: Christian Academy of Louisville, ranked number eight in the state at the end of last year Christian Academy (CAL) always seems to produce a lot of talent. In an August 22nd game Sacred Heart defeated CAL 3-0, but I have to go back to the “early in the season” argument.
