Recently, the inductees of the Kentucky Athletic of Hall of Fame for 2013 were announced, and among the legends was Sacred Heart Academy all-star coach Donna Bender Moir.

A 1979 graduate from Sacred Heart, Moir originally came to prominence as a standout basketball player, leading her team to a KHSAA State Basketball Championship in the ‘70’s.

Moir would go on to be known as one of the best golfers in the state of Kentucky in addition to her hoops proclivities. Following her education, she returned to her alma mater becoming a coach for the team she had led as a player.

As a coach she became the first person to win a KHSAA State Championship as both an athlete and coach. In addition to that first championship, Moir has led Sacred Heart to more state championships than any other school in history. Today, Moir is not only the school’s premier coach but is also the Athletic Director.

Moir’s astounding career is probably best summed up by the woman herself who said at the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, “It was a great time to reflect on a lot of the things we’ve accomplished at Sacred Heart.

I’m one of those who remembers all of my coaches because Bunny” (referring to fellow hall of famer Bunny Daugherty) “coached me in almost everything. It was so nice to reflect on the impact they had on my life in such a positive way.”

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
