Last Thursday opened up the high school varsity football playoffs for Kentucky; all classes had teams on display for 1-A to 5-A, and in those various divisions a plethora of Louisville teams made their way into further rounds.

However, this got me thinking about the crowning of Mr. Football for Kentucky, considering all of the great athletes that were on display this weekend who will be named the 2012 recipient. Well, I can’t tell you that, what I can tell you is that in the 26 years that Kentucky has crowned a Mr. Football six honorees came out of the Louisville football system.

And, in those six only three high schools are represented, first Trinity who has had a family legacy, first with Jeff Brohm in 1988, who went on to play in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, and more recently in 2003 with Brian Brohm who suited up in the pros with both the Green Bay Packers as well as the Buffalo Bills. Both of the Brohms played their college football at Louisville.

St. Xavier has one Mr. Football over their own, Rolandan “Deuce” Finch received the title in 2008, Finch went on to play at Boston College.

The school with the most Mr. Football’s though is Male, first in 2000 with Montrell Jones, after high school Jones played with both Louisville and Tennessee. Following Jones, Michael Bush in 2002, who made his way to play with the Cards after leaving the Bulldogs and currently plays in the NFL with the Chicago Bears.

And, of course Louisville’s current all-star quarterback Doug Beaumont came out of Male in 2006 winning the title.
Who will stand out in this year’s playoffs, that will became increasingly evident as the state tournament continues.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
