It’s official: the temperature has officially reached “cold as hell” status. This term may be oxymoronic in nature, so let’s just roll with it. Quit hibernating, peel yourself off the sofa, don’t join the massives with the annual winter hobby of watching TV. Try “warming up” to one of the outdoor adventures happening this weekend around Louisville.
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is featuring a “Winter Star Stories” workshop this Friday, December 10th from 6:00-9:00 PM. According to Bernheim’s website, “Don Spain and his core of volunteers from the Louisville Astronomic Society . . . will set the stage for the evening experience by [instructing participants] how to look through a variety of telescopes, hear a few star stories, or ensure that you are sufficiently ‘moonstruck‘ for a lunar lighted moon walk.” Bundle up because most of the tour is outdoors. The price is $8 for members and $12 for non-members; advanced registration is required.
Kentucky has an amazing underground cave system--Mammoth Cave has the largest in the world. Try warming up underground where the temperature stays moderate year round. Mammoth Cave’s winter hours run from 8:45-5:10 and the easy drive could make for the perfect getaway this weekend. Throw in a quick stop at Dinosaur World just off the highway, and the whole family will be happy.
Across the river, Marengo Caves in Marengo, IN (about a 40 minute drive from downtown) offers an expansive cave system tour. I recently toured the cave with a group of my sixth grade students and thoroughly enjoyed the experienced (believe it or not). Our guide was enthusiastic and well-informed; we were often amazed at the structures buried below. Way better than the mall this time of year.
