Spring may not have officially sprung in Louisville, but while the beautiful weather lasts, we better take advantage of it. Who knows, we could be stuck in doors all the way to Derby. And if your house is anything like mine, our ears and furniture won’t be able to take it. If you are looking for some outdoors activities to air-out the the whole family, check out the listing below for some inexpensive, nature-oriented treats.

    Winter Star Stories at Bernheim

-- Next Saturday, February 26 from 7:00-9:30, “Bernheim at Night: Winter Star Stories and Sky Watch Night” will feature a close-up view of the moon and Jupiter led by The Louisville Astronomical Society and Bernheim volunteer naturalists. The evening will begin with an indoor presentation teaching participants to look through telescopes and share star stories to “set the stage” for the moonstruck evening. Dress for the weather rain or not and call (502) 955-8512 for more information. Registration is required and the fee is $10 for non-members, $8 for members.

Harry Potter Family Night Safari at the Zoo

-- Next Saturday, February 26 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. (yes, you read that right--an all-nighter) the Louisville Zoo will host a Harry Potter themed Night Safari. Families may set up a tent outdoors or sleep indoors at the MetaZoo Education Building. The evening will feature a night walk through the Forbidden Forrest, a camp-out at the zoo, and families will wake up to a Krispy Kreme breakfast  before departing on a guided tour the following morning. Experience animals up close and personal during a “Magical Creatures” class. Pretty interesting... Visit www.louisvillezoo.org for more details and registration information.

Lincoln Memorial at the Waterfront Park

-- For the past few weekends, my family and I have marveled at the Lincoln Memorial located at Waterfront park near Tumbleweed. Dedicated in June of 2009, this spectacular monument celebrates Lincoln’s ties with Kentucky and displays one amazing statue of the 16th president--large enough for your littles to climb on and sit in his lap. My three-year-old talks about Lincoln all the time now, it definitely leaves an impression. Four bas reliefs chronicle Lincoln’s ties to this state, slavery, and politics. Hit the swings under the bridge to nowhere and the playground and you have one amazing, educational, and free day.
