If Baseball is the “American pastime,” the Cincinnati Reds are America’s team. They are the modern incarnation of the original Cincinnati Red Stockings, the oldest professional baseball team in the nation, and the celebrated organization continues to exude an awareness of its own rich history. Its mission to pass the Reds spirit down through the generations is being realized this summer with the launch of the Cincinnati Reds Baseball and Softball Camp, presented by Safeco Insurance.

This official summer camp of the Reds will be offered in Louisville for the first time from June 11 to 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kentucky Country Day School, and is open to boys and girls aged six to 14 years old. The week will challenge and motivate budding athletes in a variety of ways, namely through 30 hours of instruction, skills development, competitions, and teambuilding. Campers will learn the fundamentals of sport inside and out, and even have their swing analyzed by the very same technology used by professional franchises. One day of camp will see attendees transported by bus to the Great American Ball Park for an exclusive tour of the bullpens, dugouts, broadcast booths, and the legendary clubhouse. Each camper will receive a full Reds uniform, four tickets to a 2012 season Reds game, a personalized graduation certificate, special instruction from current first base coach Billy Hatcher, and will be treated to an appearance by a current Reds player.

Best of all, this week of friendship and fun is designed for competitors of all skills levels.

“It doesn’t matter if your athlete is six and picking up a bat for the first time, or 14 and is the best shortstop for the Tri-State’s top travel team,” says Tim Rappe, Executive Director of Reds Baseball Camps. "This camp will profoundly improve each player’s ability to play the game.”

To sign up for the Cincinnati Reds Baseball and Softball Camp, and to learn about pricing and other details, visit the Reds Camp website, or call 1-855-8GOREDS (1-855-846-7337).

    About Karen Ellestad

When I was seven and my brother was eight, we both wrote to 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?' for a free t-shirt. Two weeks later his arrived in the mail, signed by Carmen Sandiego herself, accompanied by an autographed picture of the cast, an official membership to the 'Gumshoe Club,' and a Rockapella casette tape. I got a postcard.
