Recently the Cincinnati Reds have been on a bit of an upsurge, ranking among the top teams in the national league, this is in no small part due to the conglomeration of former Louisville Bats on the team, this came after a pre-season scrimmage of the current Reds roster versus the Reds futures team, which featured a number of current Bats that concluded in the Reds futures actually defeating the already big league athletes.

Ironically, it’s no mere coincidence that as the Bats struggle this season the Reds (who have called up many of Louisville’s stars in recent years) have found a real footing in major league baseball.

With all this in mind, I thought I’d take a look at all of the former Bats who currently suit up with a jersey that features Mr. Redlegs. In fact, of the twenty-five active roster players on the Reds thirteen of them spent time right here in the Derby City.

In 2003, Ryan Hannigan spent the tail end of the season with the Bats prior to getting the call for the 2004 season. The 2007 Bats have three athletes that are currently in the queen city, pitchers Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto as well as slugger Jay Bruce. The following year’s squad produced current Red Logan Ondrusek, and from 2009’s team, Sam LeCure.

2010’s Bats have produced the most big leaguers in recent years with Louisville native, Mike Leake, Devin Mesoraco, Zack Cozart, Kristopher Negron, Todd Frazier and of course Aroldis Chapman.

Just this season a Bat has already moved to Cincinnati, J.J. Hoover who played with Louisville in early 2012.
Those former Bats are in the midst of a series away with the Dodgers while the current Bats are in the middle of a two day stand against Indianapolis at home.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
