Life will finally be black and white this spring

Life isn’t always black and white, usually wearing pieces in several shades of gray – 50, as certain ascended fan fiction authors would have you to believe – but as of this spring, life in the realm of fashion will be just that. Prepare yourselves, for you are about to witness the division of gray into black and white. They will have control of the horizontal, the vertical and the diagonal. They’ll even infiltrate prints to the point that some pieces will resemble the visual aspect of white noise. In other cases, it’ll be as simple as a few blocks of salt and coal, if not only two. Your pants, your blazers, your tops and dresses, nothing will be spared. Have a look at the shape of things to come.

The trend of black and white is part of an ongoing trend of minimalism, keeping things simple while allowing the design to be the star. Such is the case with black and white stripes, from classic referee/rugby homages to chevrons, pinstripes, even vertical bars. If looking as if you’ve escaped from a 1920s prison or Super Bowl XLVII isn’t your thing, however, patterns and prints may be the cure for your fever. Think houndtooth – a timeless classic and the easiest to consider for anything you wear – chessboard, checkered (in time for the Daytona 500 next Sunday, NASCAR fans), waves, animal print, floral… you name it, and it most likely will exist. Finally, for outright simplicity and minimalism, blocks of black and white will suffice, whether it’s a color-block top or pair of pants, a black blouse over a white pencil skirt, or a white dress with a black belt.

Afraid the summation and absence of color are too minimalist for your liking? A brightly colored scarf and some equally exquisite jewelry will simply pop against the foundation, drawing attention to your overall look.

Want to know where to go? White House Black Market in Mall St. Matthews and The Summit is the best place to start; black and white clothing is their stock in trade. And remember: Dress for your body first, no matter what the trend du jour happens to be. All the best. Check out their coupon page here!
