For me, Saturday night was dancing in a new dress with my boyfriend, bourbon in hand, for a good cause. What did you do? If you were at the 26th annual Bourbon Ball then you were where the cufflinks were shining and, if you’re doing it right, the dresses binding. Gowns seemed to hover above the steps as women carefully descended the stairs trying to balance drinks, dresses, and shoes that do so much for the figure and much more to the feet.
The ball offered a two-hour bourbon tasting and cigarette girls carrying cigarette trays on thick straps around their shoulders (not to be confused with the cigarette fairies) offered cigars to partiers going onto the patio. Several tuxedoed patrons following trays of mini crab cakes provided by Silver Spoon. The ball was at the Henry Clay and after hearing stories fr graffiti artists breaking into the building during its abandoned phase, I was excited to explore around the party and nothing brings out the Nancy Drew in a girl like an open bar.
The auction at the ball, featuring a famed jockey-signed saddle, raised $20,000 to support the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, and that amount will rise when the contribution from ticket sales is tallied. KMAC is a one-of-a-kind institution in Louisville and while I am not quick to embrace folk art, its importance to the free flow of creativity is undeniable.
