Kites are fun, colorful come in all shapes and sizes. Kids and adults alike love kites. Who would have thought kites would have a place in history? The Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts can tell us all about that.
Steamboats have been around since 1787 when John Fitch made his maiden voyage up the Delaware. When people think of them they think of the Belle of Louisville, Delta Queen and the Great Steamboat race every year at Derby time. Everyone is excited to see who is going to win those Golden Antlers. Kids and adults alike love the sound of the whistles and watching the turning of the great paddles on the back. It makes one wonder what James Howard saw through the lens of his camera at his tender young age when he began to photograph Steamboats in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Did he picture the steam billowing up through the big stacks? Did he see the soot on the bow and landing, even at times the clothing? James 'Captain Jim' Howard experienced all of this, and more...and his wonderful photography shows it all.
Hub caps and Art: when you think of these you normally do not put them together. I ask Chris, a visitor to our beautiful city, who resides in Columbus Ohio and is in town for the World Fest, what is the first thing he thinks of when he hears the word hub caps. He said, "riding down the road and one popping off so you have to go chase it." I found that quite amusing given the story that artist Karen Welch relayed to me about a certain artist hub cap. You can hear that story and see that hubcap for the final week at the Museum of Arts and Crafts.www.kentuckyarts.org
A lot's been going on at the Slugger Museum last year and now as we head into the early days of baseball season they welcome a legendary artist.
