Sam Swope, founder of the Sam Swope Auto Group, has given the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) its largest gift from an individual donor: $1 million.

The gift will be used to help fund the Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center (TLC), which will be built at the KHS main campus on Steedly Drive.

With the TLC, the Humane Society can better serve animals in the Louisville area that have suffered from abuse, cruelty, neglect or illness, or have behavioral challenges that need attention. The center will require KHS to raise an additional $3 million, and will likely take around three years to complete, according to KHS President and CEO Lori Redmon.

Of the generous gift, Redmon said in a statement, “Mr. Swope has long been a friend to companion animals. With his gift, KHS will launch a campaign to create what we believe is the nation’s first stand-alone medical and behavioral rehabilitation center for dogs and cats. We are so grateful for Mr. Swope’s incredible generosity and his desire to help our state’s most vulnerable shelter pets.”

The additional capacity at the KHS will provide more room for more animals to be sheltered and brought in from overcrowded facilities in the surrounding areas, and to provide shelter to animals during large-scale emergency situations.
