Take a Photo of Your Dog for a Dog of the Year Contest

The Animal Care Society is holding this contest from now until its 11th Annual Bark in the Park walk on September 27. To enter, mail a 4x6 photo of your award-worthy pooch to ACS, 12207 Westport Road, Louisville, KY, 40245, or email it to events@animalcaresociety.org. The award winner will be the dog with the most donations made in its name at the Bark in the Park walk. Grand Prize includes a doggie gift basket full of goodies. Don’t forget to make plans to be at the walk.

Shop Til You Drop (off Some Donations)

If you are out and about, stop by the brand-new Re-Tail Thrift Shop at 10519 Watterson Trail in J-town. Donations to the shop are welcome, and proceeds go directly toward helping the animals at Animal Care Society. You’ll find everything from new animal supplies to furniture.

    Go for a ResQWalk

Download the ResQWalk app for iPhone and you’ll be walking the dog and raising money for rescue animals at the same time. Once you get the app, sign up for your mileage to be applied to a donation for the Kentucky Humane Society. The app tallies all the miles recorded by walkers for each animal rescue organization and sends off a donation weekly.

Fill the Fridge at Lucky’s Market

This weekend (and through the months of August and September), when you bring your own reusable shopping bags to use at Lucky’s Market, you can make a 10-cent donation to one of its chosen non-profits – and then the store matches those donations. Through September, the Shamrock Pet Foundation rescue organization is one of the chosen recipients. So remember to take all your bags and contribute through the Bags for Change program.

    Get Dolled Up

If you’re feeling fancy, attend the Kentucky Humane Society’s Tuxes and Tails Gala, Saturday, August 16. From 6:00 p.m. to midnight, the Galt House is the site of the annual fundraising event, which includes dinner, an open bar, a silent auction and adoptable pets. This year the gala has a Versailles – or Fur-sailles – theme, so really put on the ritz if you want to keep up. Individual tickets are still available.

    About Kachina Shaw

A transplanted Hawkeye, I've now lived in Louisville longer than any other city. Can't live without: my husband and fur babies, coal-black coffee, peanut M&Ms, sunflowers, monthly vacations, books, walking paths, massage and a big purse.
