2011 Bonaroo J Cole Performance of "In the Morning"

J Cole is the first artist that was signed to Hip Hop rapper/mogul Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Before the breakout of this star, Cole grew up with his mother in Fayetteville, NC making beats and rapping in his own home. He would later graduate high school, and move to New York City to attend St. John's University on an academic scholarship. This new journey in New York would allow Cole to attend college, but more importantly, focus on his music in a much bigger market. Cole has admitted to waiting numerous days outside of his favorite rapper, Jay-Z's office building, hoping to run into the head honcho himself. Cole's wish finally came true as he ran into Jay-Z one day, however, the meeting wasn't what he expected.

Cole would continue to work on his music despite this, eager to make a name for himself in the Hip Hop industry. Jay-Z would later hear Cole's song, "Lights Please" and call him to discuss signing him to his record label. After joining Roc Nation in 2009, Cole had the opportunity to appear as a guest feature on Jay-Z's latest album, "The Blueprint 3." He would also release two of his best mixtapes, "The Warm Up" and "Friday Night Lights," to the public via Internet for free download. He recently released his first official album, "Cole World: The Sideline Story," under Roc Nation this past year. Since then, Cole has been working on his music as well as touring the world. This will be J Cole's debut performance in the state of Kentucky.

    About John Deren

I am currently an intern as a contributing writer at Louisville.com. I'm a current senior at the University of Louisville finishing up a college degree as a Communications Major and plan to graduate in Spring 2012. I also work part time at UPS as a secondary sorter (boring). In my spare time I like to hang out with friends and also write and record music as a Hip Hop artist. Two of my biggest passions and interests are sports and music, especially basketball and Hip Hop music. I am 23 years old and have been living in Louisville basically my whole life and love it!
