This month, Eastern high school seems to be a power house in the region. Producing the only native Kentuckian in the NBA’s All-Star game in current Celtic Rajon Rondo and now winning the regional basketball tournament, the Eagles seem to be on a hoops tear right in the heart of March.

Bellarmine University was the sight of the boys’ basketball regional championship when Eastern faced off against long-time rival Jeffersontown. It was a nail biter that went down to the final buzzer, concluding with seven-time regional champion and Coach Jason Couch hoisting yet another trophy over his head.

This championship earns the Eagles a trip to Rupp Arena in the state sweet sixteen to crown the best team in the state. Their next game is set for a tip off of Wednesday, and in it they’ll square off against (4) Warren Central. Nationally, the team currently sits within the top 25 high schools in the country at number 24.

Currently, Louisville’s boys’ high schools have been on a thirteen year championship draught, after Ballard’s victory in 1999. An Eagle championship would be the second in the school’s history.
    (8) Oldham County High School has also made their way to the tourney. They’ll square off against Winchester’s (10) George Rogers Clark High School Wednesday at noon.

Meanwhile, the Girl’s basketball sweet sixteen tournament in Bowling Green’s Diddle Arena has a field with several Louisville schools represented. In the opening round (7) Manual defeated Crittenden County and are set to meet (4) Bowling Green on Friday. Meanwhile, Butler won their game against Perry County Central in a game that came down to the wire with a score of 42-40. They tip off against (5) Marion County on Friday as well.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
