During next week's F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop (Feb. 26), Kaviar Forge & Gallery (1718 Frankfort Ave.) will kick off an event called "Light a Candle for Haiti." Owner and master blacksmith Craig Kaviar, who had participated in another benefit for the earthquake-ravaged nation, decided his gallery could do something, too.
Through April 3, 50 percent of handcrafted candlestick and candle sales will go to Doctors Without Borders' efforts in Haiti. (Since the magnitude-7 earthquake demolished Haiti Jan. 12, more than 200,000 have been reported dead.) For the event, several artists from all over the country have submitted iron, hammered copper, glass and stone candlesticks. Prices range from $35 to $300.
"We knew aid wasn't getting to Haiti fast enough. Ultimately, the goal is to get everybody to give what they can," gallery manager Blair Manning says. "The whole issue of medical care is still going to be there even though the death toll stops rising. Haiti will need our help long after the earthquake."
