January  howls with snow, the interstates are jammed with traffic, and there are political ads on tv; we're all in need of some comfort food. Lil Cheezers is a food truck that produces some of the finest foodie comfort in our great town: grilled cheese sandwiches. Not just any grilled cheese, either, these are gourmet sandwiches, complete with home cooked potato chips and spicy tomato basil soup. Lil' Cheezers can be located by their twitter; their menu is small and their operation is fast, neat, and affordable. Did I mention they drive a cheddar-orange food truck that smells of heaven?

The Fancy Pants is probably the most interesting and inventive grilled cheese at Lil Cheezers, with caramelized onions, slivered granny smith apples, chopped walnuts and Brie. I am an avid fan of the mild taste of a good Brie cheese, and Lil' Cheezers does a fantastic job of complimenting that delicate flavor with the tang of apples and the slight sweetness of caramelized onions. The Caprese grilled cheese is a fresher offering, less traditional but certainly welcome. Soft, moist mozzarella, tomatoes and basil steeped with a balsamic vinegar reduction--this is the grilled cheese sandwich for grown ups. The fried bologna sandwich has big slabs of bologna, crisped and covered with a melty smoked gouda. The interaction of that lush velvet gouda texture with the tender bologna and the crisp, buttery bread is a perfectly orchestrated swell of tastes. All the bread on the sandwiches is thin and browned crisp, because everyone knows there's nothing worse than a soggy or burned grilled cheese, unless it's no grilled cheese at all.

Let's face it: Louisville needs some comfort right now. Shemageddon has gotten us all down, and with the winter weather coming out (finally) it's only getting worse. Cheer yourself up with an ooey gooey grilled cheese sandwich, and think back to younger days when traffic was something you never thought about, and winter just meant more snow days. Savor the cheesy stings hanging out of your sandwich, the crunch of a toasted walnut, and the warmth of a great meal.
