The overwhelming anticipation of the political race to the White House has brought up a gut-wrenching number of topics for debate. But one topic you, as an American, should never have to debate is pizza.

Pizza is never faced with the issues of equal opportunity in the workplace or reproductive rights. It never voices a controversial opinion on race relations or foreign policy. And whether you’re campaigning for Clinton, sporting a Sanders bumper sticker or still having trouble pronouncing “Kasich,” every voter can all agree on the goodness of a delicious, hometown slice of pizza.

So next time you feel overcome with frustration over the upcoming presidential election, weigh the pros and cons of each candidate and comfort yourself with a cheesy slice from one of Louisville’s best original pizzerias.

    Papalinos Italian Pub

    3598 Springhurst Boulevard, 502-736-2700

Imagine a glorious brunch buffet overflowing with roasted vegetables, peppery scrambled eggs, juicy tomato slices and thick bacon. Now imagine all of it smothered in cheese and tossed onto a pizza. Every slice of this overloaded pie is equal to a full plate.

    The Big Wick
    Wick's Pizza
    3 Louisville Locations

When their customers ask for "everything" on their pizza, Wick's takes it seriously. The Big Wick includes heaping portions of savory beef, Italian sausage, thick pepperonis, green and black olives, mushrooms, chopped onions, juicy tomatoes and sliced green peppers. Hope you're hungry.

    All Meats Classic
    Boombozz Taphouse
    5 Louisville Locations

If you're an indecisive carnivore who just can't choose between pepperoni, Italian sausage, tender ground beef, ham or crispy bacon, this is the pizza for you. All five of these meaty favorites top this pie in huge quantities. Why settle for just one when you can have them all?

    Impellizzeri's Pizza
    3 Louisville Locations

Whether you're looking to cut calories by decreasing your toppings, or you've got a picky eater on your hands, you can never go wrong with cheese pizza. And Impellizzeri's gluten-free option makes it that much more appealing.

    Hawaiian
Pleasure Ridge Pizza & Sports Bar
    2500 Crittenden Drive, 502-384-4777

There's nothing wrong with sticking with the classics, especially when you order one of this scrumptious pies. This Hawaiian gem keeps it simple and delicious with only a few toppings, mouth-watering ham, tangy pineapples and mozzarella cheese.

    Pizza Margherita
    Pizza Donisi
    1396 South 2nd Street, 502-213-0488

This Old Louisville pizzeria knows that the Margherita pizza has been an Italian tradition for ages, which is why they never stray from its original toppings: freshly chopped basil, juicy roma tomatoes and hand-pulled mozzarella. Feel confident in your decision when ordering this one.

    The Completely Controversial

    Image: Yelp

    Chicken and Waffles Pizza
    Spinelli’s Pizzeria
    6 Louisville Locations

Classic doughy crust is spread thin under layers of mozzarella, crispy fried chicken, bite-sized pieces of waffles and a drizzle of sweet maple syrup. Don’t let the odd cheese and waffle combination scare you away, this flavorful team isn’t up for debate.

    Hot Brown Pizza
    Danny Mac’s Pizza
    1567 South Shelby Street, 502-635-7994

Just when you thought pizza couldn’t get any more controversial, a Germantown pizza joint whips up its own Mornay sauce and spreads it all over chunks of brown sugar ham, braised turkey, mozzarella, parmesan and provolone cheese. But we’re not complaining. Though it’s may be an oddity to some, this pizza has won our vote.

    Asparagus Pizza
    Garage Bar
    700 East Market Street, 502-749-7100

Crunchy asparagus, chopped pea shoots and sour lemon may seem like good toppings for a salad, but for a pizza? We vote yes. And with one bite of this scrumptiously fresh pizza, you'll be a proud supporter too.
