One year in the lives of friends admist a rent strike and the AIDS epidemic is chronicled in Rent, which will open at Centerstage on Thursday.
Rent will take place on July 12, 14, 19, 21, 23, 26, and 28 at 7:30 p.m. each night. Matinees, meanwhile, will occur on July 15, 22, and 29 at 2 p.m. each day. All performances are to happen at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville, located at 3600 Dutchmans Lane in the Highlands section of Louisville.
Advance tickets are $18 per person, and tickets purchased at the door are $20 per person. Group discounts may also be available. All tickets can be purchased at the door, by calling JCC at 502-459-0660, or online at the Centerstage website.
Also, a limited number of rush tickets will be available before select shows for only $10 per person. Information on how to obtain them can be found at the Centerstage website.
The musical Rent focuses on a year in the life of friends, who are artists and musicians and struggling to survive, on New York's lower east side. The friends and romantic relationships will be tested during a rent strike. Also, the AIDS epidemic impacts many of the friends, sometimes tragically.
At each performance, Centerstage will accept donations for local HIV/AIDS charities.
Rent won four Tony Awards, including best original score and best musical, during its original Broadway run. Many of the Broadway actors ended up in the 2005 movie of the same name.
John Leffert directed Rent for Centerstage. The cast features Kate E. Reedy as Mimi, Jordan Price as Roger, Alonzo Richmond as Collins, Derius Kenner-Williams as Angel, Lamont O'Neal as Benny, Brian Bowles as Mark, Lauren McCombs as Maureen, and Tymika Prince as Joanne.
