School’s. Out. For summer! Oh wait. There are still some schools still in session aren’t there? At least that’s what my daughter keeps reminding me. Well, the last day of school will come. But before JCPS lets out officially for summer, the Louisville Free Public Library is throwing a huge party to celebrate one of the things they do best: summer reading.

This Saturday, June 1, gather up your family and head downtown to the Main Library at 3rd/4th and York Streets for a science and reading extravaganza. The library plans so many events all year long, and the Summer Reading Kickoff always proves to be a huge hit with Louisville families. It’s one of my favorites, as I am very partial to our libraries (I used to work this event as the children’s librarian at the Jeffersontown branch.) Now I love taking my kids to this event and spreading the word about the awesomeness that is the Louisville Free Public Library.

Beginning at 10am, families can take part in games, activities, and of course, stories! Meet Curious George too! Several local educational agencies will be on hand to help keep the fun going, including the Kentucky Science Center, Mad Science, and the Speed Art Museum. The festivities are scheduled until 12:30pm. June 1st is the official first day of the library’s summer reading program. Your kids can pick up their summer reading card at the kickoff or at any library location and start reading their 10 books to win some great prizes. Check out this entire list of summer reading programs occurring all over the city and surrounding areas as well. This year’s theme at LFPL is “Build Your Brain”-what better way to do that than by reading and filling your mind with countless treasures from adventures with books.

You won’t want to miss the Summer Reading Kickoff and all of the other fascinating family programs going on throughout the summer at all 18 library locations. Best part about all of this? It’s entirely FREE! In addition, if your child has accumulated some overdue library fines throughout the year, the library has a terrific program called “Read It Down”, in which kids and teens can have fines waived off of their record by reading at the library! You can call 502-574-1620 for any questions regarding this program.

The Main Library is located at 301 York Street. See you at the library!
