It was a big day on Sunday for downtown New Albany as they held the 2nd annual Boomtown Ball and Festival. For only being the second year the festival had an impressive line-up of musical artists and local vendors.
Boomtown claimed space along Market and Bank streets in downtown New Albany. A place better known for its fall festival, Harvest Homecoming. However, it was refreshing to see that Boomtown hosted a variety of local vendors and artists. While I love a good ole fashioned funnel cake served out of a typical fair food truck, it was a nice change to see New Albany support its local restaurant infrastructure with Aladdin's Cafe, Seeds and Greens, Louis Le Francais, and others present at the event.
While local food and business is an excellent feature what was most impressive were the musicians playing the festival. With the help of New Albany natives, Houndmouth, the line-up this year was notable for a free event drawing a larger crowd and bands from out of state. Louisville artist, JaLin Roze, was the only hip hop rock musician on the bill. It was interesting to see him play at 4 in the afternoon and for only 30 minutes. However, even with only 30 minutes and an early show he never missed a beat. Langhorne Slim was the artist that everyone was most surprised an captivated by. A Nashville singer-song writer with a twang of Cat Stevens played a set that Boomtown's crowd couldn't help but to give their full attention to, mostly because he talked to the audience almost as much as he played. The Features and The Apache Relay wrapped up the evening and while Houndmouth didn't make any surprise performances, Kate Toupin did join The Apache Relay for their song "Katie Queen of Tennessee".
