Classes just started at Bellarmine University, but nearly 600 incoming freshmen will leave campus today to take part in “Knights in Action: Day of Service.”
The even, which will benefit 27 community organizations, will kick off this morning with remarks from Mayor Greg Fischer and men’s basketball coach Scott Davenport. Some area locations that will benefit from the volunteer efforts Gilda’s Club Louisville, Father Maloney’s Boys and Girls Haven and, in a timely twist following Saturday’s devastating storms that left over 100,000 customers—many in the Highlands—without power, Joe Creason Park.
“Support from volunteer groups such as Bellarmine University has a tremendous impact on our community,” says Andrew Brooks, volunteer coordinator for Metro Parks. “Volunteers help extend our resources and provide much needed attention to parks. With recent storm damage from this weekend, these Bellarmine students are lending a hand at a time when our parks need it most!”
Knights in Action isn’t a one-off project; service is built into the Bellarmine curriculum. Many classes include opportunities for students to benefit the community while enhancing students’ knowledge in a particular course’s subject area. Students also take part in service trips to underserved areas such as Appalachia, Guatemala and Belize.
