It is impossible to stamp anywhere through Old Louisville from point A to point B without the scenery slowing you up. Even though I'm a native Louisvillian, the victorian-style neighborhood still staggers me--and if I'm not caught up admiring the architecture town home to town home, I must admit to wanting to hop a fence or two in broad, sober daylight.
The bait behind the fence would be the secret urban garden saddling up next to the tall, old home.
Forget fence-hopping because this weekend folk can meander leisurely through a self-guided tour, armed solely with a fan that doubles as a map of the gardens. The 18th Annual Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour is kindly put on once again by the Second Street Neighborhood Association. Old Louisville gardeners will be standing by at each destination on the tour to share how their garden grows. Hydration will be provided along the tour for those tuckering the tour out in the heat. There will also be present a drawing for cash or tickets to the 2012 tour, a silent auction, and garden-related vendors. And if you attended the tour last year, expect fresh flowers--the gardens included are rotated year to year due to the large size of the victorian-style neighborhood.
If your quick on the draw you can purchase discounted tickets at $12 online, by calling (502) 635-5244, by emailing OLNC@bellsouth.net, or by dropping in at the Old Louisville Information Center in Central Park before 5pm today (July 8th). Tickets purchased in advance may be picked up at the sales table during tour hours. The sales table (official starting point of tour) will be located in front of the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, 1402 St. James Court at Magnolia Ave.
Tickets may also be purchased at the sales table both days of the tour. Tickets are $15 when purchased on Saturday and Sunday.
