Spirit Animal is a New York based indie-rock band that is quickly blossoming into one of the most talked about bands around.

Blending soul, funk, and garage rock into a giant musical milkshake that is flourished with U2 inspired guitar riffs.  All of the retro ingredients blend together somewhere in the collective soul of Spirit Animal to make something completely new and completely original.

The band is presently working on writing and recording their debut album, while their first two EP’s hint at a band on the brink – a band with focus and direction and ready fill the world with more kick-ass party rock.  They released their first EP, aptly named “This is a Test,” was a statement piece that started a conversation about the band among some of music’s most influential names.  Their second EP named, “Kingdome Phylum” produced the single “The Black Jack White,” which was immediately touted by Mtv.com, and the accompanying video was passed around music magazines, bloggers, and critics creating an almost instantaneous buzz around them.

Spirit Animal was formed by front man Steve Cooper and bassist Paul Michel – who met in 2002 when both were living in Washington, D.C.  Once they added guitarist Cal Stamp and drummer Ronen Evron to the mix and you have a special chemistry that spurned something great in the band Spirit Animal.  They’ve already proven to be animals in the studio and their live performance is something to behold – with an unparalleled level of energy and enthusiasm, Cooper and company bring the party with them to ever single show they play.

Spirit Animal will be performing at Zanzabar Saturday, June 13th.  The show begins at 9:00 PM and tickets are $8.00.  1200 and Stereo Empire will also be on the show.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
