As if there weren’t already enough reasons to love our local Farmers’ Market now we’ve got another one. Not only can we hit the markets to buy fresh, local food, now we can watch and learn from some of our community’s best chefs preparing meals made from the same farmers’ market ingredients we’re buying.

“The Mayor's Healthy Hometown Movement, Kentucky Proud, and Pennyrile Allied Community Services are sponsoring a series of events this summer at Louisville's neighborhood Farmers' Markets. 24 local chefs will compete across the city to create "Winning Market Meals," dishes created from fresh, local ingredients that can be easily recreated by cooks at home in approximately 30 minutes. They will be judged on originality, nutrition and overall taste, and how easily the recipe can be replicated by the average home cook. The competition is part of an effort to promote healthy, home cooked meals and increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally.”

The “Winning Market Meals” events start this weekend, May 31, and continue through August 2, each week at one of 12 different farmers’s markets in the metro Louisville area. There will not be an event over Fourth of July weekend.

Though I can’t find confirmation of this online I saw a flyer last weekend at the Bardstown Road farmers’ market that said the first pair of dueling chefs will be the Castro brothers. Chefs Joe and John are well known for their contributions to the Louisville food community and their personalities. They should make for an entertaining display this coming Saturday morning in the Highlands.
