We have access to some of the best bourbon in the world in Kentucky. So when someone suggests we try something different, we may scoff. After all, we have everything we need right here, right? Well sure, but there’s something we bourbon lovers may not have considered- what do you recommend to a guest who is a Scotch drinker? Do you know the difference between peated and non-peated Scotch? What kind of bourbon would appeal to a Scotch drinker?
If you don’t know the answers to those questions, it’s time to delve into the world of Scotch. The Whisky Chicks did just that last night at Westport Whiskey and Wine in a class led by Southern Wine and Spirits rep Sidney Cline. The lineup consisted of top picks from Diageo’s Scotch portfolio. Diageo, while known around these parts as the owner of the Bulleit brand as well as the Orphan Barrel Project and I.W. Harper, has been a major player in the Scotch world for quite some time.
The lineup included Glennmorangie, Mortlach Rare Old, Oban 18, Talisker Storm, Ardbeg 10, and Caol Ila Stitchel. They ranged from non-peated to heavily peated, which gave tasters an opportunity to sample the wide variety of flavors under the umbrella of Scotch. The tastings were also paired with different foods, ranging from dark chocolate to smoked salmon. It’s helpful to learn the different flavors of Scotch, but it’s also great to experience how those tastes can change with certain food pairings.
The Whisky Chicks have been putting together some top notch educational experiences from the start. The next event will be a dinner with Jimmy Russel for which tickets are extremely limited. Click here for more information.
