Looking for something to do next weekend? Bring your friends and family out to a friendly volleyball tournament while raising money for the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville. Saturday, June 13, the third annual Spike It To Cancer Sand Volleyball Tournament will take place at Baxter Jack’s Volleyball Club (427 Baxter Ave.) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event is hosted by Alex and Tommy Gift, who are the founders and benefactors of the Mary Jane Gift Quality of Life Fund. This fund was created in honor of the Gifts’ late mother and is used to support cancer patients and their families at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center.
Admission for spectator or player is $25, and the site is currently open for registration and donations. Teams of 6 may also sign up to play for a total of 150 dollars. Registration is available the day of the event from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and check in is also at 1 p.m. Additionally, Ward 426 (across from Baxter Jack's) has agreed to donate a portion of all their sales of the night to the fund.
All of the money raised this night will be given to the Mary Jane Gift Quality of Life Fund. As Michael Neumann, Executive Director of Development at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, explains, this fund provides the necessary money to bring a little happiness to the patients and families of the cancer center. As one of many examples, the fund has been used to provide Easter baskets to multiple patients for the past two years. Anyone can lend a hand in the continuation of these thoughtful gestures, so come out to the tournament to support a cause and enjoy a great atmosphere with volleyball fun, good food and even better company.
