    Bit to Do

This Saturday, August 29, from 11am to 4pm, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center will be hosting Splat Out Cancer at the corner of 6th and Market St. in Downtown Louisville (539 W. Market St.). Everyone just has to follow one motto, one slogan: “Do good, be bad.” Individuals may start arriving as early as 10:30am. Parking will be available at the parking garage across from the event lot and in the Republic Bank garage next to the lot.

What is this event exactly? It is a first time fundraising event to raise money for cancer research. The idea behind the event is to find a fun call to action to raise public awareness of what the cancer center is doing and the need for research, as well as to create a piece of public art through the hands of the community. Michael Neumann, Executive Director of Development at the Cancer Center, had spoken with Scoppechio, an advertising agency, and the idea of Splat Out Cancer was created. Individuals and businesses can participate with a donation for $25 for one paint balloon. Pre-registration will be open until Thursday (August 27th) 11:59pm. With pre-registration, each individual will receive a free commemorative t-shirt! Registration will also be open the day of the event with the t-shirts on sale for $20.

On the day of the event, there will be three catapults set up to launch paint balloons of various colors. Individuals may write on their balloons prior to catapulting them to get out their frustrations and feelings in a positive manner! The first balloons will be thrown by VIP holders: President Ramsey of UofL and several cancer survivors. There will also be food trucks, information booths from 13 organizations, a children’s play area, and more! Neumann and the Cancer Center hope that this will be a fun-filled, meaningful day for everyone and hope to evolve it into an annual event!

Neumann emphasized that 100% of all funds raised will be put towards cancer research with the optimism that this movement will gain momentum and significance to individuals not just in Louisville, but everywhere! Currently, over 350 people have already pre-registered online, but they are expecting over 1,000 people to show up! Splat Out Cancer has received tremendous support from the community, and they cannot be more grateful. This event is the first installment towards their goal of raising $1 million for the Cancer Center’s research!
