I don't get out much, so when I do I like to make it count. So when I walked into the Silver Dollar on Saturday night to discover there was a two hour wait, I was devastated. All I had been thinking about all week was their chicken and waffles. Just get through one more day, I told myself, and I could go get some chicken and waffles and a kickass bourbon cocktail. Instead I went home sad and dejected.
I tried again Sunday morning, and while the wait time was much less, I was able to get in after about 25 minutes. Then I discovered my much-coveted chicken and waffles weren't on the brunch menu. I wanted to cry. OK, maybe I did actually cry a little bit.
So I was going to have to break out of my chicken-and-waffle funk and try something new. I'm so glad I did. I got the Texas style chili cheese hashbrown, and oh my gracious was it good. Spicy shredded chili meat, hash browns, cheese, and scallions, and probably some other deliciousness melded together to make the most amazing chili cheese hash you could ever imagine.
My husband got the smoked chicken enfrijoladas, which had a fresh corn tortilla, black beans, queso fresco, onion, and cilantro. He was kind enough to share a bite with me before he inhaled the entire plate at a dangerous pace. It wasn't even that he was especially hungry; it was just that good. He also tried it with all their different house-made sauces, kicking it up a notch.
I looked at the drink menu several times and contemplated getting a Mint Julep or a shot of bourbon, but I eventually decided against it. I was thrown into an indecisiveness loop by the lack of chicken and waffles. Maybe next time I'll beg and let them see me cry a little bit.
I highly recommend The Silver Dollar for any meal. The brunch menu can be found here. Maybe if we all beg they'll add chicken and waffles to it.
