There are few Louisville organizations better that Highland Youth Recreation. See, I'm a sports idiot. So when my son began doing flat-footed laps through the house, making a window-shattering game out of every possible projectile, and awkwardly attempting to kick, catch, and sprint--I knew it was time to enroll him in a sport. We started with HYR and have been pleased ever since.

At HYR the focus is on fun and learning (even for me), so no one keeps score and rabid parents don't heckle from the sidelines. There is an essence of community among the parents, the coaches, and players. It exudes positivity. Although my son has inherited some of my non-coordinated tendencies, it's okay, because he's learned many skills from the coaches and student-referees and he's always felt the team spirit, the pride, and the fun regardless of ability. The director of HYR takes this mission seriously--at the beginning of the season, parents are coached on how to act during practices and on the sidelines which I appreciated with my sports etiquette ignorance. My son has enjoyed both baseball and soccer with HYR and has a collection of trophies to prove it.

HYR is currently registering for the fall soccer season which runs September 17-November 5 with practices starting the week of September 12. There is one hour of practice per week with a game on each Saturday at Atherton High School in the Highlands. You've never seen so many rotating games on a field run so smoothly. The coaches are all parent volunteers adding to the non-competitive atmosphere. The cost is $50, which includes a shirt, photo, medal or trophy, if you register by August 20. Parents may register on-line or in person at Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church between 1-4:00 August 20. Late registration costs $60.
