Saturday come meet and greet the summer sky's most popular air performers!

On Aug. 27th from 3 to 6 pm Yew Dell Botanical Gardens will be putting on the Hummingbird Festival.

Hummingbirds are swift and startling, and are the only bird capable of flying backwards. Many people aim to attract the colorful creatures each summer by setting out plants that attract them, but this one-of-a-kind experience allows the attendee to get up-close and personal.

Experts will be on hand throughout the entire Hummingbird Festival including Master Brander, Brainard Palmer-Ball; Photographer, Russ Thompson; And Yew Dell Gardens Horticulture Staff. Brainard Palmer-Ball will demonstrate the hummingbird banding and educate attendees on the essentialness of banding to ecological study. Russ Thompson will cover tips on how to capture the quick birds with a camera, display his own hummingbird photography on a screen, and help attendees critique their own photos (if photos are upload-able to a laptop and attendee wishes to participate).

Plenty of children's activities will be available between 3:30 and 4:30 including crafts, face painting and storytelling.

    Light refreshments will be provided.

Plants and feeders attractive to hummingbirds will be for sale at the Garden Shop.

Besides the typical admission ($7 per adult, $5 per senior, free for members and children 12 and under), the intimate and unusual experience is free.
