Fun fact: Ghyslain is pronounced JEE-slane. I always wondered about that! Second fun fact: Ghyslain's chocolates and pastries are the bombdotcom. Third fun fact (just because it's the holiday season): What better way to put you in an altruistic mood than striking, handcrafted chocolates that explode with caramel upon eating them?

Ghyslain caramel-filled chocolate with pumpkin design

On a monsoon Sunday, women gathered to learn about Hadassah from captivating National Vice President Mindy Bloom and discover the je ne sais quois of Ghyslain. Sort of like the experience of winning a golden ticket to Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. But with the bonus of hearing about goodwill, which always gives me renewed faith in humanity.

Before hearing all about the cool things that are happening because of Hadassah’s endeavors, one of Ghyslain’s employees unearthed some of the factory secrets. The desserts are made without any preservatives, and the colors are entirely organic, made from natural fruits and veggies. No wonder the gourmet chocolates and pastries are such works of art. Everything is hand-painted. Chef Ghyslain is truly dedicated to his craft, and it shows.

Ghyslain Italian Baguette, Side Salad, and White Ambrosia Tea with Cream

As I sipped on my white ambrosia tea with cream, I appreciated knowing the story behind it all. Their teas are a highlight of this charming bistro. While my Italian Baguette was tasty, the best part about it was the focaccia bread that was leaping with flavors of garlic and pepper. The salad always tastes fresh, with juicy cucumbers and tomatoes. I love the atmosphere there. But I don’t think I would want to visit without ordering one of their pastries. The pastries take three days to make and they are worth every penny. And I totally want those exquisite chocolates for my Valentine’s Day birthday. I am a sucker for extraordinary caramel.

    Ghyslain Royale Hazelnut Pastry Description

There is a great phrase in Spanish that translates to “Full stomach, heart happy.” After a great meal, Ms. Bloom passionately told us all the ways Hadassah is making a difference in the world.

From influenza vaccines to achieving the first bone marrow transplant in Israel, Hadassah believes in advocating progress in diseases and healthcare. Hadassah is even working on engineering new drugs to help stop cell development in pancreatic cancer. These are no small dreams. They hope to reach an impact on a global level. I find that incredibly admirable.

And of course, a little chocolate on the way is not only empowering, but also supremely delicious.
