    Bit to Do

Preschool story times this March help beat the winter blahs

Everyone's getting a little antsy this time of year. The novelty of winter--fires, cozy sweaters, boots--has worn off and all we can think of is Spring! But we still have to wait. And wait. And maybe wait some more. And if you have a toddler or preschooler at home, this last month of the winter blahs can be brutal. Luckily, area bookstores have some story times planned this March that will help pass the time.

This Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 am, Pottery Barn Kids at Oxmoor Mall hosts Read Across America Day. The event, held just outside the store to accommodate strollers and roaming kiddos, is free. On March 12 at 11:00, your child will enjoy a special St. Patrick's Day story time. In addition to these special book clubs, their free weekly book club takes place every Tuesday at 11:00 am. As I mentioned in this article, if you haven't been to PBK to shop for books, you might be surprised. They have a terrific selection of picture books, perfect for gift giving this spring.

On Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 am, A Reader's Corner Bookstore will host a themed story time. Usually, treats are provided and kids always get to pick a book to take home. This store carries used and new books and is the perfect place to shop once your child has zeroed in on a series he or she loves. Is your son devouring the Magic Tree House books but you don't want to buy twenty-something (or more) volumes at full price? Check out A Reader's Corner and save some cash.

And mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 20 at 10:30 to join the friendly folks at The Parent-Teacher Store for preschool story time. Beginning this March, The Parent-Teacher Store will host a story time on the third Wednesday of the month to include seasonal book selections (this month's feature is Dr. Seuss!), prizes and freebies, and songs. During story times, 10% of any purchase will go to support the building of the Louisville Children's Museum. This month, your tots can meet the new LCM mascot. Rumor has it he/she needs a name; maybe your son or daughter can submit a suggestion.

Dates and times are subject to change; addresses, websites and phone numbers are listed below. Happy story time!

    About Anna Frye

After living in Chicago, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Colorado, my husband and I made our (hopefully? probably?) final move back to Louisville, where I was born and raised. Ahhh...it's nice to be home. Now I'm busy making sure my three little ones learn to love the quirks and traditions of their new hometown: Kentucky Derby Festival, no school on Oaks Day, grits and hot browns (not necessarily together), monograms, parks, festivals, and even our seasonal allergies.
