About two weeks ago I got "Colors," the five-song EP from Louisville band the Pass. According to iTunes, I've already listened to the entire album 17 times. I've said before that the band's songs — especially "Saturn's Ocean" and the title track — make it impossible not to dance. That was the case over the weekend at Zanzabar (2100 S. Preston St.), where the foursome tore through a set that stretched from late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
I haven't yet heard the band's new album — which lead singer and guitarist Kyle Peters tells me should be out in about a month — so I'm not sure of the names of several songs the Pass played at Zanzabar. I will say that each band member dripped with sweat by the time the first tune ended. Peters' rapid-fire guitar mixed with synthesizer blasts and Neil Lucas' furious drumming had the dance floor packed from start to finish.
At one point during the show, Will Roberts, who plays keyboard and bass, knocked over his keyboard stand. Instead of stopping, he held the keyboard in one hand and continued to bang away. "You just gotta keep playing," Roberts told me after the show. (That's what you see in the above photo, taken by Louisville Magazine's John Nation. I took the poorer-quality images that follow.)
The full-length album is getting its finishing touches right now. After the show, Lucas — who was wearing a sweat-soaked headband — described the new material. "It's fun music," he said. "I dance to it while cleaning around the house."
