    Bit to Do

This week's Parents and Preschoolers edition is aimed to help preschoolers and their exhausted parents beat the heat this summer. Let's face it: summer is a bear in Louisville. The humidity alone is enough to do me in. Not to mention how awful it is to drive around with the sun beating down on you in a car with no air conditioning. So where can parents and their preschool-aged children head indoors for cool, summer fun? Here are ten ideas for you:

    1. All of our area libraries have fun summer program lineups for preschoolers and other children. From storytime to summer reading programs to special events, if you're not in your local library at least once a week with your preschooler, you're missing out! Of course my favorite is the Jeffersontown Library, part of the Louisville Free Public Library system.

    2. Kids Bowl Free Bowling is a great indoor option to stay cool! There are many options around Louisville and Southern Indiana with bowling alleys offering this great steal of a deal! Check it out here.

    3. The Louisville Cultural Pass Program offers tons of indoor options for children and one accompanying adult to enter free. There's no excuse to not use this great opportunity in our great city!

    4. The Kentucky Science Center is remodeling its first floor exhibit space into a early childhood central exhibit called "Science in Play." When it reopens to the public on July 4, there will be plenty for preschoolers and younger children to do! Until then, the Science Center is open (except for the first floor), so go see what they have going on. The center shows movies too, and that is one cool place to watch a movie. See this post as well for a list of free or really cheap movie deals all summer long.

    5. Heartland Music Together just started its six week summer session this week, and there's still a chance for families to enroll in these awesome music classes designed to engage parents with their young childern. See more information about registering or check out a free demo class on their website.

    6. Head to an indoor trampoline park! Sky Zone Louisville in Jeffersontown has been around for a few years, and House of Boom just opened up in Middletown. Both have about the same prices and offer jump times for the younger crowd and their parents. Sky Zone's is on Fridays from 11 a.m. -12 p.m. and House of Boom offers KidJump Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. -10 a.m.

    7. Get yourself some froyo! Frozen yogurt shops are all over the place in Louisville and Kentuckiana, and they are a fun and adorably sweet place to take the preschoolers to let them get a healthier frozen treat. Let them pick one or two toppings from the colorful topping bars, and they'll be smiling from ear to ear.
Frozen Yogurt Shops in and around Louisville:

    Lula's Frozen Yogurt and Treats

    Sweet Frog Louisville

    Sweet Savannah's

    Orange Leaf

    32 Degrees Yogurt Bar

    Mee Mee's Treats

    Pearl Street Treats in Jeffersonville

    8. Oxmoor Center's Tot Lot is my go-to when it's just too plain hot or rainy. My kids and I go there a lot in the winter, but I sometimes forget that it's also a great place to head when you want to beat the heat. Take your preschooler on an animal ride during your visit. They're kind of cool for a thirty minute let's-do-this-once kind of gig.

    9. KaZoing! Party and Play is another one of my go-to places I keep in my back pocket. They have tons of options for indoor play, from open play and gym times, art sessions, a toddler area and Mother's Day Out options. Some months, I just need four hours to myself to work or do whatever needs to be done, and I remember that KaZoing has a great option for dropping your child off in a safe, fun environment.

    10. Indoor swimming is the classic summer option. Places like Mary T Meagher Aquatic Center and All About Kids always come to mind. Did you know that kids can take swimming lessons at the University of Louisville as well? See Louisville.com's recent list of where to swim in Louisville for more information.
