"Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Visitors and residents, families and children, young and old alike can now visit a unique setting right here in the heart of Louisville. A butterfly farm is set up in Shelby Park, and it is a place to see this summer.

Idlewild Butterfly Farm, run by Entomology Solutions, opened this past week to the public. Entomology Solutions specializes in biological pest control for home gardens, greenhouses, farms and more. The butterfly farm concept was founded by Blair Leano-Helvey.

The farm sits on a block of concrete in the urban-ness that is the city streets of the Shelby Park neighborhood. Step inside, and you'll find a paradise of sorts. Individuals, as well as groups and various school classes, can visit the butterfly farm from around the city. The farm will embrace educational opportunities for connecting youth with entomology (the study of insects). There will be opportunities for field trips to the lab on site. As you're using your Cultural Pass this summer, make a pit stop here for a reconnection with nature and the beauty of butterfly watching.

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." - Muhammad Ali

Idlewild Butterfly Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.-4 p.m. (closed Mondays). It is located at 1100 Logan Street at the intersection of E. St. Catherine Street (40204).

According to a Facebook post, the farm will begin offering tours next week: "You are welcome to come and check out the butterflies for no cost at this time. We will be giving tours of the lab, big bugs and butterflies very soon! We will post times of tours and cost in the next few days. Thank you for inquiring!"

You can see and interact with butterflies and shop the gift store for gifts and jewelry, as well as nectar and host plants for your own butterfly garden. See the website bugsbehavingbadly.com for more information, or call 502-384-8953.
