This weekend, Oldham County Library held its first-ever comic convention, OC3. In an attempt to raise money for its growing comic book and graphic novel section, Oldham County Library hosted a ton of fun events on Saturday including a silent auction.
Many vendors and artists set up at OC3. A few favorites of mine, The Halloween Queen (where I got two necklaces, one from American Horror Story and one from The Princess Bride, for just $12) and Izzy’s Creations (where I got a Captain America hair clip and a baby Groot hat for only $14), were in attendance. Kids had a lot of activities to choose from like an outdoor superhero obstacle course and an activity room where they could make their own superhero masks.
Students from Bellarmine University organized a Doctor Who trivia game, which was great fun for the four contestants chosen at random and the audience as we got to chime in on the contestants’ “ask the audience” and “phone a friend” life lines.
There were even two costume contests, one for kids and one for adults. Some of my favorite costumes in the adult competition included AntMan, who created the iconic headpiece from a Motocross helmet, and Death the Kid, who took a white wig and colored it with Sharpie to get the stripes just right.
My favorites in the kids’ competition included a mini 11th Doctor, a Weeping Angel, IronMan, and a very elaborate Predator.
Organizers Jonathan Swinney and Bethany Morse did an amazing job with the lay out of the booths, planning the activities, and organizing the event in general. OC3 had a great turnout, and I certainly hope this leads to more conventions for great causes like reading! For more information about OC3, visit the official Facebook page!
